TIDWELL MASONRY has the required certification to build with the Proto-II™ Wall System. If you want a block wall built, this type of wall should be taken into consideration. The Proto-II™ Wall System is designed to save you money! There is a total of up to 40% savings in choosing to have a Proto-II™ wall built instead of the conventional type. With over 25 years and over 20 thousand miles of the Proto-II™ walls being built in Los Angeles and Riverside County, it has proven itself as a reliable engineered system. Now, the PROTO-II™ POST TENSION MASONRY WALL is an excellent choice for SAN DIEGO! The Proto-II™ type wall can be built using any type of block, such as the Split-face, Slump or Standard units. These walls can have a stucco or plastered finish and can be veneered.

The idea of using post tensioning to structurally support masonry fencing in lieu of rebar and grout was unheard of in the mid 1980’s. At that time, Proto-II™ Wall Systems had developed and patented a post tensioned masonry fence system called The Proto-II™ Wall. In 1986 Proto-II™ Wall Systems began licensing masonry contractors throughout the Southwestern United States to install this patented wall system. Since then, the Proto-II™ Wall has set new standards for masonry fence and retaining wall construction and has become a preferred product throughout the Southwest.

The Proto-II™ Wall System is a patented and engineered masonry wall design that uses post tensioning to structurally support masonry in lieu of rebar and grout. The Proto-II™ Fence and Retaining Walls use the same masonry block and have the same appearance as conventional masonry walls. The difference is on the inside: Conventional masonry walls use rebar and grout for support, while the Proto-II™ Walls use post tensioning. This advanced technology provides a stronger, more efficient design. The Proto-II™ Wall is available in 4”, 6” and 8” wide masonry fencing and also in 8” and 12” wide retaining walls. The Proto-II™ Fence Wall is stronger and more durable than conventional or segmental masonry systems and a far superior product than vinyl or wood fencing. The post tension design is a blend of efficiency and strength resulting in a superior, cost saving product. Proto-II™ Fence walls can be built in lieu of competing conventional masonry walls, vinyl fencing or wood fencing. With the Proto-II™ Fence Wall System, significant savings and superior structural integrity are realized without any compromise in appearance.

How does post tensioning work in masonry walls?

What-Proto-DIAGRAM-2.jpg

The Proto-II™ Wall is constructed using concrete footings and standard concrete masonry units (CMU block). High strength steel tension rods are connected to rebar in the footing. A Steel bearing plate, a high grade nut and a Direct Tension indicator (DTI) washer are installed near the top of wall. The rod, plate and nut assembly are tightened to a specific torque rating which collapses the DTI to achieve the specified tension within a 3% tolerance. The tensioning results in compression distributed throughout the wall, dramatically increasing its strength and load capacity over conventional grouted masonry walls.
